Every child deserves to feel prepared for the first day of school and celebrated on their birthday. Yet for many children in foster care, these milestones can be overshadowed by uncertainty, transitions, and the challenges of adjusting to a new home.
At Rayola, we believe every child deserves to know they belong—not just when they first enter foster care, but throughout the year. That's why we're excited to introduce two new care packages designed to bring comfort, confidence, and celebration to children across Northern Michigan: our Back-to-School Care Package and our Birthday Care Package.
These new programs expand Rayola's mission of providing belonging and comfort to children in foster care and any child in need, ensuring children receive thoughtful support during two of childhood's most meaningful moments.

A Strong Start to the School Year
The beginning of a new school year is filled with excitement, but it can also bring anxiety. For children in foster care, starting school often means more than meeting a new teacher or finding their classroom. It may mean attending a brand-new school, making new friends, and trying to fit in while navigating major life changes.
Rayola's new Back-to-School Care Package is designed to help children begin the year feeling prepared and confident.
Each package includes essential school supplies such as a handmade pencil case, notebook, pens, pencils, hand sanitizer, and chapstick. Every child starting their senior year of high school also receives one of Rayola's signature handmade quilts, providing comfort and a reminder that they have something that belongs entirely to them.
To help carry their new supplies, girls receive a handmade boho bag while boys receive a cinch sack. Each package is completed with a Rubik's Cube, offering a fun activity that can help reduce stress and provide entertainment.
These items may seem simple, but together they send a powerful message: someone believes in you and wants you to succeed.

Every Child Deserves a Birthday Celebration
Birthdays are about much more than cake and presents. They're a chance for children to feel loved, recognized, and celebrated.
Unfortunately, many children in foster care don't experience the birthday traditions that so many families take for granted.
Rayola's new Birthday Care Package aims to change that.
Each package includes everything needed to create a birthday celebration at home: a disposable baking pan, cake mix, frosting, a can of soda to prepare the cake, birthday candles, festive plates, and napkins.
Children also receive a new book to keep as their own and a voucher for a scoop of frozen custard from Culver's, adding an extra special treat to their day.
Every Birthday Care Package is finished with a decorative bow, making it feel like a true birthday gift from the moment it arrives.
Rather than simply providing supplies, these packages help create memories and traditions that every child deserves to experience.
A Pilot Program with Big Dreams
The Birthday Care Package will launch this year as a pilot program serving children in Ogemaw and Roscommon counties.
This exciting new initiative has been fully funded by an anonymous Rayola supporter, whose generosity is making it possible to test the program, gather feedback, and prepare for future growth.
Rayola's goal is to expand the Birthday Care Package throughout all of the organization's service area in 2027, bringing birthday celebrations to children across Northern Michigan.
Join the "Buy a Bag" Campaign
As Rayola prepares to distribute these new care packages, we're inviting our community to become part of the mission.
Each care package costs approximately $15 to assemble.
That means a single $15 donation provides one complete bag for a child in foster care.
To help launch these new programs, Rayola is kicking off its "Buy a Bag" donation drive. Community members, businesses, churches, quilting groups, and families are encouraged to sponsor one bag—or several—by donating in increments of $15.
When making a donation, donors are encouraged to note that their gift is part of the Buy a Bag campaign so it can be counted toward the program.
Every bag purchased represents far more than school supplies or birthday decorations.
It represents confidence on the first day of school.
It represents a birthday cake with candles.
It represents a child who knows someone they've never met cared enough to make sure they felt remembered.
A Chance to Win While Giving Back
As a special thank-you, everyone who donates to the Buy a Bag campaign before September 1 will be entered into a drawing to win two free tickets to Rayola's 2027 Quilt Show.
It's a fun way to support children in foster care while also having the opportunity to attend one of Rayola's signature community events.
Whether you choose to purchase one bag or several, every donation helps ensure more children receive comfort, encouragement, and a reminder that they matter.
More Than a Care Package
At first glance, these bags are filled with practical items—a notebook, a quilt, cake mix, or birthday candles.
But to the child receiving them, they mean so much more.
They say, "You deserve to start school with confidence."
They say, "Your birthday is worth celebrating."
They say, "You are important."
That has always been Rayola's mission: to provide more than things. We provide belonging.
Through the generosity of volunteers, donors, and community partners, these new care packages will help children experience moments of normalcy, joy, and hope during seasons that can otherwise feel uncertain.
Together, one bag at a time, we can remind every child that they are seen, valued, and deeply loved.
